Global warming

Written by admin on Aug 16 2007 | Science

Recently we heard of melting of ice and glaciers in the polar regions of Antarctica in the news paper. An important cause of global warming is the increase concentration of carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere. Since carbon dioxide is confined exclusively to the troposphere, its higher concentration may act as a serious pollutant. When there is increase in carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere, the thick layer of this gas prevents the heat from being re-radiated out. This thick carbon dioxide layer thus functions like the glass panel of a green house, allowing the sunlight to filter through but preventing the heat from being re-radiated in outer space. This is called green house effect.

Carbon dioxide layer and the water vapors present in the atmosphere absorbed most of the heat and add to the heat that is already present. The net result is the heating up of the earth’s atmosphere. Thus increasing carbon dioxide levels tend to warm the air in the lower layers of atmosphere on a global scale. Due to green house effect, there may be hurricanes and cyclones and early snow melts in mountains causing more floods during monsoon. Other toxic gases which are discharged from industry and agriculture also help in global warming. If the problem of global warming is unchecked it will cause a serious environmental problem.

DNA finger printing

Written by admin on Aug 12 2007 | Science

DNA finger printing is an important area of forensic science which is recently used as an important tool in crime detection. Each individual has distinct fingerprints. The criminals too are aware of it and leave no finger prints. The DNA prints are like the finger prints and are used for the similar purposes, the method is often referred as DNA finger printing. With the DNA finger printing technique criminals can be identified because no two individuals have identical DNA prints except the zygotic twins.

So the development of a technique to identify individuals by comparing their DNA with the DNA isolated from a sample of blood or semen or hair base, just a drop of is enough, is revolutionizing the field of forensic investigations. The technique of southern blotting is used to print the DNA of the suspect and the samples collected from the scene of the crime. If the two DNA prints one from the suspect and other from the DNA of the sample collected from the crime site are identical, it undoubtedly proves that the suspect has committed the crime. The technique can also be used to settle paternity disputes with much certainty.

Importance of Science

Written by admin on Jul 07 2007 | Science, Miscellaneous

We all know that science is the root of all progress we are enjoying today. Science has achieved a wonderful progress in the modern world. Today, we are able to live with comforts in different spheres of our life is all because of science. If we carefully study the progress of human civilization, we shall find that science is at the root of all progress. With the knowledge of science, people learnt many things for the increased production of food crops and their preservation. Now people are growing food crops in desert tracts.

Hydroponics, growing of plants in water without soil is a new science. Men have built better houses for living. With scientific knowledge men have built better houses for living. We heard of sky scrapers of New York of America .Men learned to use machine power from coal, oil and electricity. The atomic energy has brought in a new age. Means of transport have been wonderfully improved from bullock carts and boats to cars, buses, aero planes and spaceships etc. Within a short time we can send messages to distant places. With the development of medical science many diseases can be cured. But science has also negative impacts too. Men are able to make powerful weapons which can destroy human lives and its properties. So science itself is neither good nor bad.
