Environmental pollution

Written by admin on Aug 22 2007 | General

Any kind of pollution is hazardous for our living. Air, water, land pollution are probably more familiar to people than other environmental problems. A more recent and dangerous is the noise pollution. A matter of great concern is the radiation and chemical pollutants coming out from nuclear power plants. There are various kinds of pollutants. Carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulates, hydrocarbons and photochemical oxidants are the major air pollutants. Pollutants like smoke which are directly emitted into the atmosphere from the various polluting sources are called primary pollutant.

In the atmosphere primary pollutants may undergo changes by reacting with sunlight, moisture, or with other primary pollutants and formed secondary pollutants. Man has been disturbing the natural environment directly or indirectly through his domestic, agricultural and industrial activities. Water resources are badly affected by heat, toxic metals, acids, sediment, animal and human waste and synthetic organic compounds. Noise is rapidly becoming the most widespread environmental pollutant. Noise damages hearing, interferes with our sleep, conversation, concentration, relaxation and leisure. Few of us can escape it.

Global warming

Written by admin on Aug 16 2007 | Science

Recently we heard of melting of ice and glaciers in the polar regions of Antarctica in the news paper. An important cause of global warming is the increase concentration of carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere. Since carbon dioxide is confined exclusively to the troposphere, its higher concentration may act as a serious pollutant. When there is increase in carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere, the thick layer of this gas prevents the heat from being re-radiated out. This thick carbon dioxide layer thus functions like the glass panel of a green house, allowing the sunlight to filter through but preventing the heat from being re-radiated in outer space. This is called green house effect.

Carbon dioxide layer and the water vapors present in the atmosphere absorbed most of the heat and add to the heat that is already present. The net result is the heating up of the earth’s atmosphere. Thus increasing carbon dioxide levels tend to warm the air in the lower layers of atmosphere on a global scale. Due to green house effect, there may be hurricanes and cyclones and early snow melts in mountains causing more floods during monsoon. Other toxic gases which are discharged from industry and agriculture also help in global warming. If the problem of global warming is unchecked it will cause a serious environmental problem.

DNA finger printing

Written by admin on Aug 12 2007 | Science

DNA finger printing is an important area of forensic science which is recently used as an important tool in crime detection. Each individual has distinct fingerprints. The criminals too are aware of it and leave no finger prints. The DNA prints are like the finger prints and are used for the similar purposes, the method is often referred as DNA finger printing. With the DNA finger printing technique criminals can be identified because no two individuals have identical DNA prints except the zygotic twins.

So the development of a technique to identify individuals by comparing their DNA with the DNA isolated from a sample of blood or semen or hair base, just a drop of is enough, is revolutionizing the field of forensic investigations. The technique of southern blotting is used to print the DNA of the suspect and the samples collected from the scene of the crime. If the two DNA prints one from the suspect and other from the DNA of the sample collected from the crime site are identical, it undoubtedly proves that the suspect has committed the crime. The technique can also be used to settle paternity disputes with much certainty.

Discipline as a habbit

Written by admin on Aug 09 2007 | Personality

Discipline is the habit of acting according to some rules. It is obedience to the orders of the proper authority. With discipline as a way of life, all plans, policies and programmes are bound to bear fruit. For maintaining peace and happiness in a family discipline is of great importance. Obeying our superiors is a way of leaning the lesson of discipline at home. We must follow the rules from our childhood. If we do whatever we like in our childhood we will be ruined.

The aim of our education is to form our character. We cannot learn our lessons well if we do not follow the rules of the school. Discipline must also be taught in the school. Discipline must be maintained in the playground and battle field. Discipline is of great value in public life. If people go on according to their own wishes, there cannot be any order and no useful work can be done by them. Leader must learn to rule himself. If he cannot rule himself, he cannot rule others. Thus we must learn discipline in the early stage of our life. It is the only route that takes us in the right way.
